Holy Week Devotional 2026 - Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday, March 29th

Bible Passage: Luke 19: 28-44

We often approach Palm Sunday as a day of pure celebration. We picture the triumphant King riding into Jerusalem; the air filled with hosannas and the ground carpeted in palm branches. We see the beautiful fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 as Jesus rides a young donkey, symbolizing His entry as a humble King bringing peace.

However, we often overlook the profound depth of Jesus’ humility found in Luke 19:41–44. As the crowds celebrated His arrival, Jesus did something unexpected: He wept.

Even as the crowd’s praises filled the air, Jesus’ heart was heavy with mourning. He looked past the palm branches and saw the spiritual blindness of the people; they were celebrating a political liberator, not a spiritual Savior.

Jesus wept for the city of Jerusalem, knowing the destruction that lay ahead because the people failed to recognize the true meaning of His entry. He deeply desired for them to experience the peace He came to bring, yet He knew their hearts would ultimately reject Him—a choice that would secure judgment upon their city.

Though He longed for their restoration, He knew the painful reality of the days to come, that the very voices cheering His name would soon be the ones crying out for His crucifixion.
He moved forward anyway.

Jesus rode toward Jerusalem with full knowledge of the coming rejection. He knew He would be betrayed by His disciples, beaten beyond recognition, mocked, and forced to carry a heavy, splintery cross on His raw, whipped back. He knew He would eventually be nailed to a cross between two criminals.

Yet, He submitted to the Father’s will without complaint. He knew that the only way for blind, broken, and sinful people to be reconciled to a Holy God was through His perfect sacrifice. The humble heart that propelled Him forward on that lowly donkey was a heart of pure, sacrificial love for you.

When you consider the willingness of your Savior to endure unimaginable pain to bring you peace with your Creator, what is your response? Has the familiarity of the Palm Sunday story hardened your heart over the years? Or does the weight of His sacrifice bring you to your knees in thankfulness, leading your heart toward repentance?

As we celebrate His triumphant entry this week, let us look past the palm branches and see the King who loved us enough to walk toward the cross.
